![]() Press Statement | 7 April 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan Party rejects the Philippine government’s low ambition for shifting to renewable energy; targeting only a 35% renewable energy mix fo2030 that may lead to just 50% by 2040. This in turn will make it virtually impossible within the decade of 2041-2050 to reach zero emissions targets and a total shift to 100% renewable energy for the country. The country is a low GHG (greenhouse gas) emitter at 3/10th of 1% of global emissions and thus not part of the major cause of global warming in the past and until today. However, we are a fast growing economy with a relatively modest population growth. Together with other similar middle income countries we will eventually catch up as major GHG emitters in the near future if we continue to follow the same development patterns of industrialized countries that have become before us; including that of our energy mix. 55% of our greenhouse gas emissions come from energy production. Today, only 24% of our energy mix comes from renewables.

![]() Press Statement | 6 April 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan Party welcomes the landmark United Nations (UN) ruling asking the world’s top court to clarify states’ obligations regarding climate change in demanding more action from greenhouse gas emitters. Favorable judicial pro-environment interpretations of our constitution and laws have proven very supportive of pushing our Green Agendas in the past. This includes the Supreme Court (SC) Alcala vs Factoran decisions on intergenerational equity, the continuing SC Mandamus on the rehabilitation of Manila Bay and affirmation of the National Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA), among others. Quasi-judicial bodies such as the country’s Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has also made its own ruling in the accountability of Carbon Majors to the climate emergency. This UN Climate Ruling and the anticipated clarification from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the obligations of states to combat climate change will further strengthen and add to the growing pressure for climate justice to complement our own country’s judicial rulings. ![]() Press Statement | 4 April 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan Party understands the low public trust of political parties in the country. But the Party believes it a strategic political reform move to support the development of new, issue-based and ideology/principle-based, non-personality based and non-”trapo” (traditional politics of guns, goons and gold)-based political parties. And leveling the playing ground for political parties with public funding support would be the fastest way to reach this reform goal. However, the Party will not support any bill that will prioritize public funding to already established or incumbent political parties now as this will only reinforce the current set of those who were in power in the past or already in power. Given the extent of political dynasties in the country that have been perpetuated by most of the incumbent parties, this political reform proposal will only work if it does not prioritize past, current and incumbent parties. Rather, we will only support legislation that will prioritize public funding for new, emerging political parties whose nominees or candidates do not have incumbent government officials as relatives up to the 4th degree of consanguinity. 4/3/2023 0 Comments MAKAKALIKASAN PARTY SUPPORTS BAN OF OIL TANKER TRAFFIC IN & NEAR CRITICAL MARINE HABITATS AMIDST INSUFFICIENT ACTIONS ON THE MINDORO OIL SPILL![]() PUBLIC STATEMENT (Embargoed till 10AM 4/3/2023) The Makakalikasan Party joins growing calls for banning oil tanker traffic in and near critical marine habitats all over the country to avoid future incidence of oil spill as we continue to struggle with the insufficient actions and the lack of quick justice and accountability of those responsible for this man-made disaster. LuzViMinda (Luzon-Visayas-Mindanao) has a total of 991 marine protected areas (MPAs) of varying sizes and of varying degrees of protection covering a total area of 14,944.53 square kilometer or close to 5% of our total marine areas of about 300T square kilometers. While spread out across the country, the Party believes it would be manageable enough to ban all traffic of oil tankers in and around these areas. The Party do not believe this to be too drastic a measure considering how rich and fragile our marine ecosystems and habitat are and how badly the country is capable of enforcing our marine and environmental conservation laws and in responding to immediate actions for and in the long term the rehabilitation of its damages as appropriate responses to this type of disasters. |
