The UAE is one of the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases per capita. It is also a major oil and gas producer, and has been criticized for its lack of ambition on climate change. The Party is particularly concerned about the UAE's plans to sell sponsorship packages to corporations for up to £6.5 million according to a recent article by Sky News. This is a clear attempt to profit from the climate crisis, and it is a slap in the face to the millions of people who are already suffering the effects of climate change This is also a clear indication of how the conference is being commercialized and how the interests of big corporations are being prioritized over the interests of the people and the planet. ![]() Press Statement | 19 May 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan Party condemns the illegal mining activities of Chinese foreigners in Iponan River in Cagayan de Oro City. The mining activities have destroyed 10 hectares of the river delta, which is a critical area for biodiversity and water resources. The illegal mining activities have been going on, despite a writ of kalikasan and a writ of continuing mandamus issued by the Court of Appeals in 2013. These writs are powerful legal tools that can be used to protect the environment. It orders government agencies to take action to stop environmental damage. The Makakalikasan Party is calling on the government to take immediate action to ensure that all illegal mining activities in Iponan River are permanently stopped. The government must also investigate and prosecute the individuals and groups responsible for the destruction of the river delta. 5/18/2023 0 Comments For energy security, go 100% renewables & re-nationalize not just NGCP but the entire energy sector in LuzViMinda, Makakalikasan Party demands!![]() Press Statement | 18 May 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan - Nature Party Philippines expresses its full support for the recent proposal to re-nationalization of not just the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), but also the entire energy sector of the country. We believe that the energy sector should be under public ownership and control, and not in the hands of private corporations whose primary goal is profit. The successive electric transmission system disturbances and the continuing inability to solve the pervasive electricity outage limiting communities to only 4 hours daily electricity in such areas as the island of Panay and the province of Oriental Mindoro has shown how systematic the limitations are of our liberalization of the energy industry through the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) has been at the detriment of consumers in LuzViMinda. With a global energy crises upon us today, energy security is paramount for the country now; says Party President Roy Cabonegro. 5/17/2023 0 Comments Makakalikasan Assessment of the ASEAN Summit 2023. Shares concerns of President Marcos' embrace of US interests!![]() Press Statement | 17 May 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) Makakalikasan - Nature Party Philippines has been closely monitoring the recently concluded ASEAN Summit 2023, and we are pleased to see that Indonesia has ensured that the three main pillars of its chairmanship have produced concrete agreements that can now be implemented by every member state in the long term. We commend Indonesia's efforts to lay a strong foundation for the long-term vision of ASEAN post-2025, which is necessary to prepare ASEAN to face long-term challenges. We believe that this is where it is necessary to strengthen capacity and institutions so that ASEAN becomes more agile. ASEAN is facing several long-term challenges, including the shifting balance of power in the Asia Pacific, the persistence of intra-regional conflicts, border disputes, and issues surrounding the life of the dammed Mekong River, which has increasingly made headlines in the last few years. ASEAN is also facing external security challenges, including territorial disputes in the South China Sea and other concerns regarding ASEAN's role and relevance in the region and beyond. Corruption, demographic changes, uneven social development, disparities in economic development, and climate change are also significant challenges that ASEAN is facing. ![]() Press Statement | 16 May 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan - Nature Party Philippines strongly opposes the extension of the service contract of the Malampaya Gas fields until 2039. We believe that the government should prioritize the nationalization of all gas and oil fields in the Philippines, rather than extending the contracts where government stake is as low as 10% only today. In the case of Malampaya, this is even more important due to the controversies that surround possible graft and corruption that allowed for the Udenna subsidiary UC Malampaya to now have majority control. Our green agenda on Reclaiming Natural Patrimony emphasizes the importance of protecting our natural resources and ensuring that they benefit the Filipino people. The Malampaya gas field is a valuable resource that should be managed and utilized for the benefit of the Filipino people, not for the profit of corporations. |
