5/15/2023 0 Comments To The Green Force: Pursue Radical Actions Towards Sustainable National Financing![]() Press Statement | 15 May 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan - Nature Party Philippines expresses our full support for the implementation of the Sustainable Finance Roadmap and its Guiding Principles, as well as the convening of the government's Green Force. We believe that these initiatives are crucial in addressing the challenges of sustainable national financing, particularly in the context of the latest data on green and climate action national financing requirements of the Philippines. According to the latest data, the Philippines needs around Php 6.57 trillion to finance its green and climate action programs, but the government is only able to allocate around 20% of this amount. This highlights the need for urgent action to address the financing gap and ensure that the country's sustainable development goals are met.

![]() Press Statement | 14 May 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan - Nature Party Philippines expresses its frustration over the failure of the implementation of RA9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. The recent report from the Commission on Audit (COA) stating that the waste management goals were missed is a clear indication of the lack of political will and commitment to address the solid waste problem in the country. According to the Makakalikasan Party's Green Economy & Zero Waste Agenda, the root causes of the solid waste problem are the lack of awareness, education, and participation of the community, as well as the weak enforcement of the law. The failure of the implementation of RA9003 is evident in the national and local levels. ![]() The Makakalikasan-Nature Party Philippines welcomes the acquittal of former Senator Leila De Lima in the second of 3 drug cases filed against her. This is a long-overdue step towards justice, and we hope that the remaining case will also be dismissed soon. However, the six-year delay in reaching this resolution for this already high-profile case only highlights the need for serious reforms in our judicial system. It is difficult to imagine how bad the delays in case resolution for the vast majority of non VIP/ high profile cases that go beyond the statutorily prescribed time limits for cases, could be? And yet this is just the tip of the iceberg of the many governance reforms that must be implemented as spelled out in the Makakalikasan Party Green Governance Reform Agenda if we are to see a truly responsive government that will have our confidence of being able to effectively confront our growing multiple crises of public health, economic recession, climate emergency and biodiversity collapse today. ![]() Press Statement | 12 May 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan-Nature Party PH expresses serious concerns over the record-breaking number of internally displaced people due to war and climate change, as reported in a recent Inquirer article. The article highlights the urgent need for climate action to address the growing displacement crisis in the Philippines. The Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change impacts. In a 2015 study of the University of the Philippines, it showed that at a low projection of 7.6 to 10.2 centimeters sea level rise for each decade “...(m)ore than 167,000 hectares of coastland -- about 0.6% of the country’s total area -- are (expected) to go underwater. At an average population density of 363/km2 persons per km2, this is translatable to 606,210 persons. However, in mid 2022, sea level rise in the Philippines already stands at 12 centimeters. Furthermore, a projection by the IPCC for the global average sea level rise by 2100 would be about 60 to 110 centimeters (1-3 feet). Assuming the percentage of total area that will be submerged and the population density remains constant, projected permanent displacement may be around 3.03M to 5.5M (in less than a century - about 77 years). ![]() Press Statement | 11 May 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) Makakalikasan - Nature Party PH calls on President Bongbong Marcos to provide more practical details on his general statement during the ASEAN summit today. While we appreciate the President's call for ASEAN to take decisive and responsive steps on geopolitical issues, we urge him to provide more concrete and doable actions that ASEAN members can take to achieve this goal. As a party that advocates for environmental protection and sustainability, we believe that the Party’s ASEAN Solidarity green agenda is a good starting point to articulate the President's call. We encourage the President to consider the green agenda's proposals on ASEAN cultural, economic, ecological, and security solidarity as a way to achieve a more sustainable and resilient ASEAN community. ![]() Press Statement | 7 April 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan Party rejects the Philippine government’s low ambition for shifting to renewable energy; targeting only a 35% renewable energy mix fo2030 that may lead to just 50% by 2040. This in turn will make it virtually impossible within the decade of 2041-2050 to reach zero emissions targets and a total shift to 100% renewable energy for the country. The country is a low GHG (greenhouse gas) emitter at 3/10th of 1% of global emissions and thus not part of the major cause of global warming in the past and until today. However, we are a fast growing economy with a relatively modest population growth. Together with other similar middle income countries we will eventually catch up as major GHG emitters in the near future if we continue to follow the same development patterns of industrialized countries that have become before us; including that of our energy mix. 55% of our greenhouse gas emissions come from energy production. Today, only 24% of our energy mix comes from renewables. ![]() Press Statement | 6 April 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan Party welcomes the landmark United Nations (UN) ruling asking the world’s top court to clarify states’ obligations regarding climate change in demanding more action from greenhouse gas emitters. Favorable judicial pro-environment interpretations of our constitution and laws have proven very supportive of pushing our Green Agendas in the past. This includes the Supreme Court (SC) Alcala vs Factoran decisions on intergenerational equity, the continuing SC Mandamus on the rehabilitation of Manila Bay and affirmation of the National Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA), among others. Quasi-judicial bodies such as the country’s Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has also made its own ruling in the accountability of Carbon Majors to the climate emergency. This UN Climate Ruling and the anticipated clarification from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the obligations of states to combat climate change will further strengthen and add to the growing pressure for climate justice to complement our own country’s judicial rulings. ![]() Press Statement | 4 April 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan Party understands the low public trust of political parties in the country. But the Party believes it a strategic political reform move to support the development of new, issue-based and ideology/principle-based, non-personality based and non-”trapo” (traditional politics of guns, goons and gold)-based political parties. And leveling the playing ground for political parties with public funding support would be the fastest way to reach this reform goal. However, the Party will not support any bill that will prioritize public funding to already established or incumbent political parties now as this will only reinforce the current set of those who were in power in the past or already in power. Given the extent of political dynasties in the country that have been perpetuated by most of the incumbent parties, this political reform proposal will only work if it does not prioritize past, current and incumbent parties. Rather, we will only support legislation that will prioritize public funding for new, emerging political parties whose nominees or candidates do not have incumbent government officials as relatives up to the 4th degree of consanguinity. 4/3/2023 0 Comments MAKAKALIKASAN PARTY SUPPORTS BAN OF OIL TANKER TRAFFIC IN & NEAR CRITICAL MARINE HABITATS AMIDST INSUFFICIENT ACTIONS ON THE MINDORO OIL SPILL![]() PUBLIC STATEMENT (Embargoed till 10AM 4/3/2023) The Makakalikasan Party joins growing calls for banning oil tanker traffic in and near critical marine habitats all over the country to avoid future incidence of oil spill as we continue to struggle with the insufficient actions and the lack of quick justice and accountability of those responsible for this man-made disaster. LuzViMinda (Luzon-Visayas-Mindanao) has a total of 991 marine protected areas (MPAs) of varying sizes and of varying degrees of protection covering a total area of 14,944.53 square kilometer or close to 5% of our total marine areas of about 300T square kilometers. While spread out across the country, the Party believes it would be manageable enough to ban all traffic of oil tankers in and around these areas. The Party do not believe this to be too drastic a measure considering how rich and fragile our marine ecosystems and habitat are and how badly the country is capable of enforcing our marine and environmental conservation laws and in responding to immediate actions for and in the long term the rehabilitation of its damages as appropriate responses to this type of disasters. 3/31/2023 0 Comments MAKAKALIKASAN PARTY WELCOMES PHILIPPINES GLOBAL CLIMATE FUND (GCF)’s 1.4B PhP GRANT![]() The Makakalikasan-Nature Party Philippines welcomes the approval of the 7th grant from the Global Climate Fund (GCF) for the country entitled: “Adapting Philippine Agriculture to Climate Change (APA)” which is a climate adaptation of agricultural systems project with 1.25M Filipinos as direct beneficiaries. The project amounts to 39.3 million US$ with 26.2M (around 1.4B Philippine Pesos) as GCF grant and co-financing from the country of 12.9M. But it still took several years before this proposal was approved. The delay: despite the obvious urgency, has been a source of constant criticism by the country; together with other developing countries, on the effectiveness of the GCF as a whole. |
