![]() The Makakalikasan-Nature Party Philippines welcomes the acquittal of former Senator Leila De Lima in the second of 3 drug cases filed against her. This is a long-overdue step towards justice, and we hope that the remaining case will also be dismissed soon. However, the six-year delay in reaching this resolution for this already high-profile case only highlights the need for serious reforms in our judicial system. It is difficult to imagine how bad the delays in case resolution for the vast majority of non VIP/ high profile cases that go beyond the statutorily prescribed time limits for cases, could be? And yet this is just the tip of the iceberg of the many governance reforms that must be implemented as spelled out in the Makakalikasan Party Green Governance Reform Agenda if we are to see a truly responsive government that will have our confidence of being able to effectively confront our growing multiple crises of public health, economic recession, climate emergency and biodiversity collapse today. For the Makakalikasan Party, beyond this judicial reform, the other crucial governance reforms include: a) party system, b) enforcement of anti-dynasty constitutional mandate, d) re-orientation of all intelligence & security forces from punitive to rehabilitative and human-rights centric values and operational standards, and e) shift to parliamentary and federal government.
We hope that this acquittal will serve as a reminder that justice delayed is indeed still justice denied, and that we must work towards a more efficient and just judicial system, says Party President Roy Cabonegro. Cabonegro who gave Senator De Lima the idea for her now famous palm of defiance symbolic gesture reiterates his original message to De Lima: “Konti na lang at lalaya ka din at mananaig din ang katotohanan at hustisya. Naalala ko kayo at ang iyong patuloy na laban na laban nating lahat. Mabuhay ka!” For more information: Rommel Ortega -National Spokesperson Mobile: 09951768926 | Email: [email protected] | FB: /makakalikasan.party
