![]() Press Statement | 12 May 2023 (embargoed till 10AM) The Makakalikasan-Nature Party PH expresses serious concerns over the record-breaking number of internally displaced people due to war and climate change, as reported in a recent Inquirer article. The article highlights the urgent need for climate action to address the growing displacement crisis in the Philippines. The Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change impacts. In a 2015 study of the University of the Philippines, it showed that at a low projection of 7.6 to 10.2 centimeters sea level rise for each decade “...(m)ore than 167,000 hectares of coastland -- about 0.6% of the country’s total area -- are (expected) to go underwater. At an average population density of 363/km2 persons per km2, this is translatable to 606,210 persons. However, in mid 2022, sea level rise in the Philippines already stands at 12 centimeters. Furthermore, a projection by the IPCC for the global average sea level rise by 2100 would be about 60 to 110 centimeters (1-3 feet). Assuming the percentage of total area that will be submerged and the population density remains constant, projected permanent displacement may be around 3.03M to 5.5M (in less than a century - about 77 years). But temporary displacement due to singular events such as super typhoons (extreme weather conditions) is much higher and more frequent and immediate. In 2021, the Philippines had the highest incidence of displacements due to natural disasters in Southeast Asia, with 5,681,000 people displaced. In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the central Philippines. Packing sustained winds of 315 KPH, Haiyan, the strongest tropical cyclone in recorded history, claimed more than 6300 lives and left an estimated 4.1 million displaced.
This alarming statistic underscores the need for immediate action to mitigate the effects of climate change and protect our communities. The Makakalikasan-Nature Party PH proposes the legislation of Green Communes as a climate action to respond to these displacement crises. Green Communes are sustainable and resilient communities that prioritize the protection of the environment and the well-being of its residents. By promoting de-urbanization and greening cities, we can create more livable and sustainable communities that are less vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. We urge the government to prioritize the passage of legislation that will support the creation of Green Communes and other climate action initiatives. We also call on the public to support our advocacy for a sustainable and resilient future for all Filipinos.
