The UAE is one of the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases per capita. It is also a major oil and gas producer, and has been criticized for its lack of ambition on climate change. The Party is particularly concerned about the UAE's plans to sell sponsorship packages to corporations for up to £6.5 million according to a recent article by Sky News. This is a clear attempt to profit from the climate crisis, and it is a slap in the face to the millions of people who are already suffering the effects of climate change This is also a clear indication of how the conference is being commercialized and how the interests of big corporations are being prioritized over the interests of the people and the planet. The Party further notes that the UAE has not ratified the Paris Agreement, and has not set any ambitious targets for reducing its emissions. This is a clear indication that the UAE is not serious about taking action on climate change.
The COP 28 is a crucial event given the worsening conditions of the climate emergency and the continuing failures of previous COPs to reach key agreements to address the climate crisis. The world is facing unprecedented challenges such as extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and loss of biodiversity, which require urgent and collective action from all nations. However, instead of taking bold steps to address these challenges, the preparations for COP 28 have been criticized for lacking ambition and urgency. We join other environmental groups in raising our concerns about the current preparations leading to COP 28. Some of the main criticisms include:
The party calls on the UAE to cancel its plans to sell sponsorship packages to corporations, and to commit to ambitious targets for reducing its emissions. The Party also calls on the international community to boycott the COP 28 if the UAE does not take these steps. As a party committed to supporting global leadership on climate justice, we call on all nations to take urgent and ambitious action to address the climate crisis. We reiterate our commitment to our Global Climate Justice Leadership Agenda . We urge all nations to prioritize the interests of people and the planet over corporate interests and work together towards a sustainable future for all.
