6/11/2023 0 Comments Makakalikasan welcomes EPR, calls for higher price for EPR credits and pursues further plastic bans![]() A Joint Public Statement of the Makakalikasan Movement Green Economy and Zero Waste Action Group and the Makakalikasan Party The Makakalikasan Green Economy & Zero Waste Action supports the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law in the Philippines. We believe that this market-based instrument is a necessary step to reduce plastic pollution and support the entrepreneurship of waste pickers. The EPR law requires producers and importers of certain products, such as plastics, to take responsibility for the collection and recycling of those products at the end of their life. This will help to reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills and incinerators, and it will also create new jobs for waste pickers.
We are concerned, however, that the price of EPR credits may not be high enough to allow waste pickers and their groups to run their enterprises viably. We urge the government to ensure that the price of EPR credits is commensurate with the cost of collection and recycling, so that waste pickers can earn a fair wage for their work. The Makakalikasan Party also supports the banning of single-use plastics as part of its Green Economy & Zero Waste agenda. We believe that this is a necessary step to reduce plastic pollution and protect our environment. We urge the government to implement the EPR law and to ban single-use plastics as soon as possible. These measures are essential to protect our environment and to create a more sustainable future for the Philippines.
