![]() OFFICIAL STATEMENT: 8 March 2023 [Embargoed till 11:30AM Philippine Standard Time] The recent spate of deplorable issues is but symptoms of deeper social ills that plague us today. From the resurgence of questionable mining in Sibuyan & Palawan islands, to our inability to avoid and now respond quickly enough to the devastating oil spill in Mindoro. From the division nailed across the Dumagat Remontado tribe on the Kaliwa dam to the worsening cases of land-grabbing, illegal logging & quarrying in critical habitats such as the Masungi geo reserve. From the lack of regard for the plight of small drivers & operators of our jeepneys over the questionable issue of phase out for modernization without just transition to the brazen murder of local government officials by alleged syndicated criminals. From a red tagging, war mongering militarist head of the Department of Education pushing ROTC while fraternity hazing returns, to a jet-setter President creating false hopes on enticing foreign direct investment that historically do not really deliver enough and will continue to be hindred by the country's worsening human rights records born out of impunity over extra judicial killings and a pending ICC investigation of former President Duterte the government still refuses to support.
From an importation-addicted and smuggler-monopoly plagued agricultural sector that has been growth stagnant over recent years unable to secure organic food sovereignty for the country, to our low commitment for renewable energy development despite our obvious long-term advantage; source-wise due to our policy on primary of privatization of our energy sector that will never bring enough support to rehabilitate and optimize on our baseload capacities from renewable energy without huge public investment. From the ratification anew of the biggest ever free trade agreement of the country in RCEP despite our previous negative experience of earlier free trade agreements, to our inability as a country to avoid within the renegotiation of the PH-US EDCA (Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement) the blatant danger of being caught as legitimate target of military attacks by an impending geo political conflict pitting the US and China over Taiwan with northern Luzon being seen as a potential stagging ground. All these misadventures and blatant attack on democracy, social justice, ecological integrity are the direct results of generations of mal governance by oligarchic capitalist fueled by the ill-fated programs of liberal democrats that have been perpetuated by TRAPOs (traditional politicians) driven by an increasing number of political dynasties in national and local governments. At the root of these negative forces is the anthropocentric values of elite dominating and living off the poverty and deprivation of the rest; as it manifest itself in capitalist economy, elite democracy, and patriarchal values of domination. Such elite capitalistic-driven malgovernance has only strengthen an ever-increasing extreme right force in our society; ever militaristic and violent and has fueled the perpetuation and growth of syndicated criminals within and outside government. Where huge sum of wealth is generated from exploitation and illegal activities; the sanctity of life becomes a commodity that can be bought cheaply resulting in the culture of impunity we have today on all sorts of heinous crimes and real terrorism. The inability of uniting across the alternative progressive political forces in the country to challenge this dire systemic root causes and their drivers and incumbent political forces is our unbecoming. Still stuck in the notion that the primary mode of change is still a violent one born out of the barrel of the gun, progressive groups that now lead many of the alternative political forces fails to realize that the cost of this type of systemic change is one Filipino society cannot afford and do not want to facer the dire consequences of. Active nonviolence; for us remains the most effective and acceptable means that has the potential to galvanize a broader range of Filipino society today. Pitted against this lack of real alternative to drive the UNITY necessary to confront the systemic root causes to allow the country to confront, survive and thrive beyond the climate change and the other multiple crises of public health, economic recession and biodiversity collapse, a new force must take the lead. The emerging green political movement in the country must take its rightful leadership today to start confronting head-on this mal governance that we are suffering from today. On this month commemorating Women in Ecology this March, the Makakalikasan Party calls on the nurturing power of our maternalistic culture as manifested by our respect and veneration for "inang bayan" (motherland) to push our egalitarian values in deep communitarian ecologism in Philippine governance and politics NOW as a direct challenge to the current mal governance that is killing us all!
